Pre-conference workshops are held on Wednesday, October 16. NEW THIS YEAR: Each workshop is three hours, making it possible for you to participate in two workshops before the opening session begins at 4:30 p.m. Workshops require a separate registration fee of $85.
WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 16, 8:30 - 11:30 AM:
PRE-1 Get with the Routine! Embedding Developmental Goals into Daily Routines
This interactive workshop will focus on the recommended practice of working with parents and caregivers to embed a child’s developmental goals into the daily routine. We will provide ideas for developing a plan with caregivers for routines such as mealtime, bathing, dressing, play, transitions, and transportation.

PRE-2 BEST in CLASS: Positive Strategies for Reducing Challenging Behavior in Preschool Classrooms
This workshop will teach participants strategies comprising BEST in CLASS; a tier 2 intervention targeting young children with challenging behavior. Participants will learn to use evidence-based practices in early childhood settings to prevent and ameliorate young children’s challenging behaviors, promote positive teacher-child interactions, and increase child engagement and learning.

PRE-3 An Approach to Building Family-Capacity in Early Intervention
This workshop will introduce participants to an evidence-based approach to building and supporting family capacity to provide infants and toddlers with disabilities development-enhancing learning opportunities, use naturalistic instructional practices as part of the learning opportunities, and to identify and use child strengths to promote child competence. Participants will be provide guidelines and checklists they can use as part of their own intervention practices to build family capacity as well as have the opportunity to develop strategies for improving their own efforts to build family capacity.

PRE-4 iPads in Early Intervention: Functional Skills Embedded in App”lications”
This workshop reviews iPad technology trends in early intervention. Participants will learn about a variety of “Great Apps” used in home visiting such as cause and effect and communication both in English and Spanish. Participants will learn how to identify functional skills embedded in app use to support learning goals.

PRE-5: Creating a High Quality Extended Day Program: Replicating Project DATA
Learn how to replicate Project DATA (Developmentally Appropriate Treatment for Autism), an extended day program for preschoolers with ASD in this workshop. Participants will gain information on how to incorporate strategies from Project DATA, including assessments, instructional plans, data sheets, collaboration forms, etc. into their programs or schools.

This workshop will provide an overview of theoretical frameworks, feeding milestones, “red flags” and feeding assessment methods along with evidence-based strategies and specialized interventions to address feeding challenges. The interplay of culture and feeding practices will also be discussed. Feeding resources will also be shared.

Is your team interested in learning how to implement a PSP teaming approach? Join us for a workshop full of how-to strategies for using a teaming approach that supports families and their children in natural environments. You will leave with new tools and skills to implement this teaming process back home.

PRE-10: Doctoral Students: A Special Workshop just for you!
Participate in the annual Sexton Pre-Conference Workshop for Doctoral Students. Connect with students from around the country and gain up-to-date information on technology and teaching useful for your doctoral program (and beyond!). The J. David Sexton Endowment was formed in memory of David Sexton, a DEC member and Past President, whose work has inspired many students and professionals in our field. The endowment was created to support doctoral level students working in early intervention/early childhood special education. This workshop is provided at no charge, but registration is required. Register early--space is limited and we expect this workshop to fill quickly!
